When it rains, the track can get very muddy. The track builders often cut these sluices along the track and slightly angled the trail itself so the water would go into the ditch and not flow down the track itself.

NZ Part 2. In early December 2005 I hiked the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand's "Great Walks". During the 3-day trip I stayed in two different huts run by the Department of Conservation.
