NZ Part 2. In early December 2005 I hiked the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand's "Great Walks". During the 3-day trip I stayed in two different huts run by the Department of Conservation.

andrewg > Mountains! With snow! In summer! The Routeburn Track goes through some spectacular scenery.
andrewg > Key Summit. This is a spur track from the main Routeburn Track, about a half-hour's moderate climb. From this peak you get a stellar 360-degree view of surrounding mountains. There's also a nature trail at the top, complete with a bunch of markers and a little laminated guide you can take to learn more about the plants and geology of the area. It was well worth the time and effort. Most people left their packs by the side of the trail near the turnoff. When I came down, there was a little convention of multicolored packs lying on the ground.

andrewg > Near the middle of the image you can see Lake Marian. It sits in a hanging valley, a roughly flat area left behind by glaciers as they carved up the world. In this particular valley there was a bowl-like depression, creating Lake Marian. I don't think you can get there with anything but a helicopter.
