NZ Part 4. In early December 2005 I hiked the Kepler Track, one of New Zealand's "Great Walks". During the 3-day trip I stayed in two different huts run by the Department of Conservation.

andrewg > In the huts, most people sleep in their sleeping bags side-by-side with other hikers on these long rows of foam mattresses. When you reach the hut, you pick a spot and unroll your sleeping bag there. You also leave your pack and everything else you have. It's part of the culture that everyone trusts each other - you basically have to. All of your food, water, clothing, and supplies are in your pack, and the same is true of everyone else. Since everyone is in the same boat, you either have universal trust or universal paranoia. In this environment, trust easily wins. So everyone respects each other's stuff. You just leave your pack and never worry about it, not for a moment. I'm sure that there's the occasional abuse of this trust, but I never saw nor heard of even so much as a bar of soap going missing.
