andrewg  > Vacation > 7. Akaroa
NZ Part 7. My last few days in my December 2005 trip to New Zealand brought me to Akaroa, on the peninsula east of Christchurch.

andrewg > This beach is at the end of the Truman Track. I took a picture of the sign because I thought it was funny. Hubris! This beach IS dangerous! But not the way I thought at the time.

andrewg > This is the little cove where I sat for a half-hour on Truman Beach. Note the water line: the waves were just barely trickling up to that point. When I got up to return to my car, I rolled up my pant legs to keep them dry as I crossed the beach, feeling pretty good that I had taken a sensible precaution. As I passed in front of one of the larger rock formations, a rogue wave suddenly smashed in from nowhere, knocking me off my feet, lifting me up, and tumbling me around. I'm a strong swimmer, or I would have been completely submerged, spun, and probably thrown against the rocks behind me, possibly getting very badly hurt. I managed to stay in control, and fought the wave again as it receded. When it was gone, I had been submerged to my armpits. I was soaking wet but okay. My wallet and passport were okay. But my trusty little Canon A80 digital camera that I'd had for years had been completely submerged and tossed around in the salty Tasman Sea. That camera took all of the other images in these New Zealand galleries. I did all I could for it, but the camera was never again to take another picture. The remaining photos in this gallery were taken with a couple of disposable Kodak one-time-use cameras I bought. I'm grateful to have had them (though of course I took far fewer photos), but I miss my trusty little A80.
andrewg > A beach on the Abel Tasman Track. I'd call this the perfect beach, except that along the Abel Tasman there are lots of these, each as appealing as the one before, but perfect in its own way.
andrewg > An estuary along the Abel Tasman Track. This privately-owned boat isn't stranded. When the tide comes in, it will be floating high on 4 or 5 meters of water. Every day the estuary floods at high tide and drains at low tide. If you time your hike carefully, you can cut across the estuaries at low tide and save hours of hiking. Otherwise you can take the track that goes around the mudflat, and wish you were here six hours earlier! I came across the estuary, which took about a half-hour to cross. I was guided by lollipops: big bright-orange disks on poles. When the tide comes in the lollipops would be well underwater.
